Bike Trails in San Luis Obispo

SLO Life Tip #2: SHIFT INTO SLO GEAR on dozens of miles of scenic routes, paths and trails to explore on two wheels.

Biking in San Luis Obispo

With more than 75 miles of trails, San Luis Obispo is the cycling hub of the California Central Coast. Think singletrack snaking beneath the Nine Sisters volcanic peaks, country roads winding through wine country and paved routes stretching all the way to Avila Beach, Morro Bay and beyond. SLO has a way of meeting you where your wheels are.

And it’s not just the rides. Wide streets with abundant racks, bike-friendly (and plenty of bike-themed) events, and an enthusiastic community of car-free locals make it easy to roll right into SLO’s year-round cycling scene.

Sort:

Easy, Paved & Commuter Bike Routes

Bob Jones City-to-the-Sea Trail

The Bob Jones Bike Trail earns its City-to-the-Sea nickname. This paved path follows a peaceful creekside route toward Avila Beach, making it one of the best easy bike rides San Luis Obispo has to offer families, first-timers and anyone who likes a coastal payoff with a side of ocean air. Start inland, ride under tree cover and let the route gradually deliver you toward the beach. Be sure to make time for lunch, a pier stroll or a post-ride treat in Avila.

Railroad Safety Trail

The Railroad Safety Trail is one of SLO’s most useful in-town bike routes, especially if you want to move between neighborhoods, downtown San Luis Obispo and the Amtrak station without relying on a car. The paved route keeps things simple and practical, with enough local character to make even a short ride feel like part of the trip.

Go the extra mile and turn it into a history lesson on wheels with our blog: Bike Your Way Through the History of SLO.

Laguna Lake & Islay Hill Park

For simple loops, warm-up rides and easygoing neighborhood exploration, look to Laguna Lake Park and Islay Hill Park. Laguna Lake gives riders flat, scenic paths with open views across the water, while Islay Hill keeps things approachable with short routes and a little more “look what I found” energy tucked into a local neighborhood setting. All great options when you want movement, lakeside views and fresh air without making the ride the whole day’s agenda.

Madonna Inn Bike Path

Short on distance, long on charm: the Madonna Inn Bike Path is a quick ¾-mile paved connector from the iconic Madonna Inn that runs near Laguna Lake toward downtown San Luis Obispo. It’s less of an epic ride and more of a helpful link between classic SLO stops, downtown access and nearby outdoor space.

Singletrack Territory: Mountain Bike Trails in San Luis Obispo

Looking to get some dirt on your tires? San Luis Obispo’s mountain bike trails bring the Central Coast terrain into focus, with rolling hills, open-space reserves, technical sections and enough variety to satisfy riders with skill levels ranging from “first time on dirt” to “I brought my own knee pads.”

Johnson Ranch Open Space

If you’re newer to riding on dirt, Johnson Ranch Open Space is a solid place to find your footing. Its rolling grassy hills and approachable 3.7-mile loop give riders a taste of San Luis Obispo County terrain without immediately throwing them into the deep end of the singletrack pool. Expect open views, steady movement and enough terrain variation to build confidence before moving on to more technical rides.

Pro Tip: The same reasons this one appeals to beginning riders are why you’ll want to watch out for hikers and trail runners.

Cerro San Luis Natural Reserve

Cerro San Luis Natural Reserve (locals call it Madonna Mountain) is a local favorite for a reason. The 4-mile loop climbs steadily, winds along the mountainside and pays riders back with panoramic views of downtown SLO, Cal Poly, the Irish Hills and Edna Valley. The route gradually gains around 1,100 feet in elevation, so expect a real workout rather than a casual spin.

Mountain bikers looking for a technical challenge can seek out features like the Rock Garden, while riders newer to dirt should take their time, know their limits and let the trail earn its “worth it” moment one switchback at a time.

Irish Hills Natural Reserve

For riders looking to test themselves on technical turf, Irish Hills Natural Reserve’s sprawling trail network puts plenty of personality under the tires. With over 10 miles of trails and toothy singletrack sections like Froom Creek, this is where SLO mountain biking begins to grin, with climbs, tight turns and challenging features that don’t have to beg to get your attention.

Road Rides & Bike Events in SLO

SLO’s cycling scene doesn’t start and stop at trailheads. Road riders can choose from dozens of routes that roll through downtown, climb into the hills and weave through Edna Valley wine country, where riders can top off the tour with a tasty pour. Meanwhile, San Luis Obispo’s fun-loving cyclist community keeps the energy high with a packed calendar of events making SLO the beating heart of the Central Coast for all things cycling.

Local Road Loops & Biking Events

For road biking routes, group rides and longer loops, the San Luis Obispo Bicycle Club is a helpful local resource, with routes ranging from approachable 10-mile circuits to more ambitious century rides for experienced cyclists.

On the first Thursday of every month, cyclists also gather for Bike Night, a free, themed group ride through downtown SLO that starts at Mission Plaza and turns Higuera Street into a cycling celebration. Expect costumes, cruisers and a very SLO reminder that how you get around town is only half the fun.

The crew at Bike SLO County keeps SLO’s cycling spirit moving through advocacy, free community rides, and by showing up on two wheels to bike-friendly events all over town—including a month’s worth of them during National Bike Month in May—as well as all year long. (Which is easy to do. The hard part is finding an event in SLO that isn’t bike-friendly.)

SLO’s Professional Cycling Legacy

San Luis Obispo has long been a serious cycling town with a laid-back soul. National races like the AMGEN Tour of California have been held in the city and county, while annual events like Giro Della Costa Centrale and Eroica California bring riders out to experience SLO County coastlines, wine country roads and classic cycling camaraderie.

Ride SLO: Planning Your Visit

A good ride starts before the first pedal stroke. Check trail conditions, choose a route that matches your comfort level and remember that some paths are shared with walkers, runners and other riders. Translation: keep it friendly, keep it safe and save the speed flex for the right terrain.

Here are a few things to keep in mind before you clip in.

Bike Rental in San Luis Obispo

No wheels? No problem. For bike rental in San Luis Obispo, local shops like Foothill Cyclery or BoltAbout Inc. have you covered with rental bikes, gear, local tips and generations of expertise. Whatever kind of outing you’re planning, a quick shop stop is all it takes to get you on the road (or path or trail)

Know Before You Go

Before you come biking in San Luis Obispo, check current city guidance and treat posted signs as your north star. Riding on sidewalks is prohibited in the City of San Luis Obispo except where designated routes allow it, so stick to bike lanes, bike trails, marked paths and approved bike routes.

Arriving in spring? Keep an eye on seasonal blooms. If the hills are showing off, pair your ride planning with our wildflower blog and find a route that’s even more scenic than usual.
