San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre is delighted to bring roller-skating Greek muses, 1980s-style and the original, chart-topping score of XANADU to downtown San Luis Obispo this June. This hilarious, roller skating, musical adventure rolls along to a fabulous, original hit score composed by pop/rock legends, Jeff Lynne and John Farrar. Based on the Universal Pictures cult classic movie of the same title, XANADU is hilarity on wheels, a moving, electrifying tale of endless fun that will keep audiences in stitches and lift them out of their seats. XANADU is just plain fun – silly, irresistible, nostalgic nonsense with terrific music that will keep audiences humming long after they leave the theatre.
XANADU runs June 10-July 3 with performances Thursdays through Saturdays at 7 pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm. Tickets range from $20-$40 and may be purchased online at slorep.org or by calling (805) 786-2440. All shows take place at SLO REP, 888 Morro Street in downtown San Luis Obispo.

With her 2017 debut Shame, Americana songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rachel Baiman emerged as a fearless voice of the American female experience. “Shame” was featured on NPR’s “Songs We Love”, called a “Rootsy Wake-up Call” by Folk Alley, and described by Vice’s “Noisey” as “flipping off authority one song at a time.” On her new full-length album Cycles, Baiman has found a grittier musical medium for her signature unabashed and defiant songwriting, employing a majority-female team including co-producer Olivia Hally, known as the front woman of Indie-pop band Oh Pep!

Doors Open 8 PM / Concert 9 PM
Forging a bridge between pop and chamber music, composer, producer, and video artist Emily Wells builds songs from deliberate strata of vocals, synths, drums, piano, string and wind instruments. Her evocative music (described as “visionary” by NPR) and performances (called “quietly transfixing” by the New York Times) impel listeners to be attuned. Wells’s latest release, the ten-song album Regards to the End, explores the AIDS crisis, climate change, and her lived experience watching the world burn. A work of radical empathy, Regards to the End foregrounds the power of art, critique, and care to connect and perhaps redeem us.

2:00 PM: Bella White
A truly original new voice in songwriting, Bella White creates undeniable magic by mining the rare duality at the heart of her artistry. Although she hails from the Canadian city of Calgary, the 20-year-old singer/multi-instrumentalist grew up on the classic country and old-time music she first discovered thanks to her father, a Virginia native who played in bluegrass bands throughout her childhood. On her debut album “Just Like Leaving”, White balances her old-soul musicality with a lyrical perspective that’s entirely of the moment, embracing an intense self-awareness as she documents her coming-of-age in real-time.

The Quest for Tonewood
A luthier is obsessed with the idea of crafting a violin, the sound of which is so exceptional that it will thrill the musician who plays it and caress the souls of those who hear it. This will require a special type of wood, cut from a hallowed tree that is only found in a Balkan forest. A musical quest that is as thrilling as a high-stakes treasure hunt.

About Chuck Carlson:
Chuck Carlson’s winemaking career in Santa Barbara County spans more than 34 years, including the past ten years as the proprietor of Carlson Wines, specializing in limited-edition wines including Pinot Noir from Santa Rita Hills along with Cabernet Franc and several aromatic white wines from the Santa Ynez Valley.
As a young winemaker with a newly minted enology degree from Fresno State University, Chuck first joined Zaca Mesa Winery in the Santa Ynez Valley, where he helped create the winery’s groundbreaking Rhône varietal program. The “school of Zaca Mesa” has since become renowned for launching the careers of many notable Central Coast winemakers. For nearly 20 years, Chuck served as the winemaker at Curtis Winery in the Santa Ynez Valley, which was founded as one of California’s first wineries to specialize exclusively in Rhône varietals.
Along the way, however, Chuck never lost his personal affinity for the Pinot Noir grape, and in 2004 he launched Carlson Wines, with the singular goal of crafting a trio of Pinot Noirs showcasing the individual qualities of three standout vineyards in three premier Central Coast appellations. He has since expanded his offerings to Cabernet Franc and aromatic whites.
Among Chuck’s personal interests is deep sea fishing, and his related adventures have earned him the nicknmame “Calypso.” Chuck and his wife have two grown children, and live in Arroyo Grande.
