Pedal Powered & Pure SLO Vibes
From rolling hills to coastal views, San Luis Obispo offers a perfect mix of easygoing routes and scenic challenges for cyclists of all levels. And let’s be real: it’s not just about the rides. It’s about the vibes. Soak up fresh air, skip the car and explore SLO in a way that’s kind to both your body and the planet. It’s the ultimate eco-friendly, happy-boosting win.
This National Bike Month, take a spin through some of SLO’s most beloved trails. And if you’re up for more after exploring them all, we’ve got a few options just outside the city that’ll ring your bell.

For Laid-Back Cruisers
If you’re all about enjoying the sights and sounds of the trail without working overtime, you belong here. No sweat—just a little gentle pedaling and a lot of fresh air.
Bob Jones City to the Sea Trail
This paved, flat path takes you from San Luis Obispo to Avila Beach in no big hurry. You’ll have a creek for company as you pedal past lush green scenery and chirping birds. Cruise solo, with family, or with friends—this path delivers easy access, scenic views and (if you time it right) an ocean breeze as a reward.
Railroad Safety Trail
Need to get from A to B without breaking a sweat? This paved urban trail is perfect for a quick jaunt through town. The Railroad Safety Trail cuts right through SLO, offering a peaceful escape from city traffic as you roll past parks, neighborhoods and green spaces. It’s a great way to cruise downtown without worrying about cars—just you, your bike and the scenery.
Laguna Lake Loop
A little gem tucked away near SLO’s foothills, the Laguna Lake Park Loop is the perfect mix of nature without the hassle of steep climbs. It’s a short and sweet ride that loops around the lake, giving you plenty of spots to stop and soak in the scenery. The trail is paved, flat and pretty much ideal for an easygoing bike ride with a side of lakeside birdwatching.

For Pedal Enthusiasts
Ready to push your limits on two wheels? Check out these slightly more challenging trails, offering the perfect balance of challenge and reward (with plenty of awesome views, of course).
Cerro San Luis
If you’re looking for a ride with a bit of a challenge, the Cerro San Luis trail gives you a more rugged experience with views that’ll make you want to snap a picture at every turn. It’s a bit of a climb, but it’s well worth it once you hit the top and take in panoramic views of the city and beyond. Though this trail has its ups and downs, the payoff is totally worth it.
Lopez Lake Ride
A bit outside of SLO, but just far enough to make it feel like an adventure, the Lopez Lake Ride gives you a little climb…but nothing that’ll have you dreaming of a tow truck. Once you hit the lake, it’s all smooth sailing (or pedaling) with picturesque views all around. Escape the urban grind and enjoy some peace and quiet here, and be sure to take advantage of the picnic areas after.
Highway 1 Coastal Route
The Highway 1 Coastal Route offers jaw-dropping views of the ocean and rugged cliffs, but it’s not for the faint of heart (or legs). It is, however, one to add to the bucket list. Starting just outside of SLO, the route heads north along the coast, with ocean breezes and dramatic scenery at every turn. There are spots where you can stop, snap a photo and take a breather before hitting the road again.
Why Bike? The SLO Way
Let’s make SLO a little greener this May—one bike ride at a time. It’s more than just a fun way to get around. It’s a win for the planet, and our goal of carbon neutrality by 2035. Leave the car behind, reduce your carbon footprint and make SLO an even more beautiful place to live and explore.
