Three-Day Midweek Art Itinerary

Day One: Local Color, Creativity & Coffee
Get started with the first day of your San Luis Obispo arts and culture tour in the heart of downtown SLO. Start at Mission Plaza, where there are murals on nearly every street. Next stop? Bubblegum Alley. Yep, it’s just what it sounds like, a colorful, ever-changing wall of bubblegum just off Higuera Street, between Broad and Garden Street. From there, stroll over to the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art (SLOMA) to explore their rotating exhibits, and the best part? Admission is free! When you’re ready to refuel, grab a latte at Linnaea’s Cafe. The art-lined walls and laid-back vibe make it the perfect spot to stop, sip and get inspired by the local artwork.
Day Two: Films & Farmers’ Market Fun
Keep the creativity rolling into Day Two of your midweek art getaway. Start your day at the Creamery Marketplace. This open-air public market is full of local eateries, artisan shops and so much more. If your visit lands during the SLO International Film Festival in April, grab a ticket and join the celebration of storytelling on screen. Otherwise, catch an evening show at the SLO Repertory Theatre or enjoy a performance by the SLO Symphony. Love ballet? Check out the Civic Ballet of San Luis Obispo to see which performances are currently going on. And if you’re here on a Thursday, make sure to stop by the downtown SLO Farmers’ Market. Wander between rows of farm-fresh produce and local artisans selling handmade goods while you enjoy live entertainment.
Day Three: Murals, Movies & Museums
For your final day, take a self-guided walking tour to find any murals you may have missed, then pop into a few local galleries and museums to round out your trip. Head to Frame Works on Marsh Street, a custom picture framing and art gallery, or browse the Just Looking Gallery in Mission Mall to see art from both local and national artists. Swing by the EDNA Contemporary Fine Art or enjoy coastal views and interactive exhibits at the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History.
When evening rolls around, make your way to the Sunset Drive-In to catch a movie or take in a show at Opera San Luis Obispo, the only professional opera company of California’s Central Coast. If you’re here on the first Friday of the month, be sure to check out Art After Dark, a free monthly community event hosted by SLO County Arts. Each month, the downtown businesses transform into lively art spaces to showcase local artists with live music, performances and more. Wrap your day with a glass of local wine or dinner at one of SLO’s local restaurants, and cheers to a successful midweek getaway in San Luis Obispo.
