Meet Your Neighborhood Gourmet Market & Restaurant | Q&A with Steve Goodale of Park 1039

Posted July 16, 2021

When you walk into Park 1039, you are greeted by hundreds of different wines, one-of-a-kind procured items from around the globe, and a blossoming tree right in the middle of the shop. It truly feels like an epicurean’s dream. But if you haven’t tried raclette or house-made n’duja  before, don’t worry — the friendly staff is there to help introduce your taste buds and answer any questions you may have! We sat down with owner, Steve Goodale, to learn more about what makes a gourmet delicatessen, his perfect picnic basket, and Park 1039’s mission to support small, artisanal production over corporations.

Why did you decide to open Park 1039 in San Luis Obispo?

It has always been a goal to open Park 1039, to celebrate all the things I love in a place that I love.

So, how did you end up in the culinary industry?

I’ve always had a passion for food and wine, and the way that it brings people together.

If you were to do something completely different, what would it be?

As someone who loves to travel and experience the world, I think my other dream job would be an international brand manager.

Favorite thing on the menu?

At the moment, my favorite things on the menu are the Smoked Salmon Sandwich with our house made kimchi aioli (on fresh baked local bread) and our amazing caviar service. We make our own creme fraiche, potato blinis, and brunoise preserved buddha’s hand that really takes the caviar over the top.

What’s one thing you want customers to remember about their experience at Park 1039?

I’d love them to remember what a wonderful time they had, and a new taste that we may have introduced them to — whether that product was sourced locally or abroad.

Park’s mission is “Kindness, Curiosity, Passion, and Truth”. How does this guide what you do?

“Kindness, Curiosity, Passion, and Truth” is not only our guiding principle in how we interact with our guests, but also how we choose the products from the passionate artisans we work with and represent.

Build us your perfect summer sunset picnic basket! What should be in it?

Our perfect picnic basket includes bubbles, cheese, charcuterie, a fresh baguette and a tin of caviar! Add a couple of our signature sandwiches and a back up bottle of Burgundy and you’re on your way. Dessert you ask? A generous slice of our basque style cheesecake and Sauternes.

Where do you see Park 1039 in 5 years?

Hopefully thriving with a second location!

One last question…why should our community shop local?

These days, it’s more important than ever to shop local because every dollar you spend is a vote for what you believe in. Why wouldn’t we all vote to support our amazing community?
