Every July, San Luis Obispo is infused with world-class musicians from all over the country and the world ready to take their seats in performances for Festival Mozaic. In addition to the concert series, the Festival is proud to partner with the San Luis Obispo Youth Symphony and the Cal Poly University Music Department to present free Master Classes. This summer, Ellen Pendleton Troyer, violin, and William Brian Thornton, cello, took time out of their busy schedules to work with some talented, young, local musicians. Mr. Thornton offers his take on the Festival and San Luis Obispo:
“Let me tell you about Festival Mozaic. I never thought I would be able to come to a place where the level of musicianship, the beauty of the area, and the support of the community would combine in such a wonderful way. It is truly a one-of-a-kind classical music festival. Music Director Scott Yoo and Executive Director Bettina Swigger create a unique atmosphere for musicians and audiences alike to share world-class musical experiences in beautiful surroundings.
Having played in the Cleveland Orchestra for almost 20 years, I understand the necessity for an environment of support and excellence in an artistic community. This is combined in Festival Mozaic in a very special way. The artistic genius of Scott Yoo and the support of the city of SLO set up the potential for incredibly inspiring concerts. I have to say that I have performed in over 3,000 concerts around the world, and the concerts in San Luis Obispo and the surrounding areas meet or exceed the quality of any of those others. What a festival! Make it a part of your summer California experience. You’ll be happy you did.”
