Cal Poly Open House 2019
Cal Poly’s Annual Open House welcomes new students, their families, and the San Luis Obispo community to experience life as a Mustang. The 2019 Open House is a unique opportunity for parents and students to hear from campus leaders, meet with faculty, engage with other prospective students, and learn about all that Cal Poly has to offer.
Thursday, April 11th: Campus Preview Night
6pm-9pm | Farmers’ Market
Thursday evening’s Preview Night showcases Cal Poly’s culture as student clubs and organizations take over Morro Street. This is a great opportunity for prospective students to learn about all the ways to get involved on campus. While downtown, be sure to stop by the famous San Luis Obispo Farmers’ Market on Higuera Street and experience Downtown San Luis Obispo’s vivacious local culture.
Friday, April 12th: Admitted Students’ Preview Day
8am-1pm | Check-In
Open House check-in begins Friday morning at Mott Gym, followed by the official University Welcome that will take place in the Recreation Center’s Main Gym.
8am-1pm | Campus Resource Fair
The Resource Fair is an informational event held in the University Union (UU) Plaza that allows prospective students and supporters the opportunity to engage with a variety of campus resources and find out what they can expect as an incoming Mustang.
9am-9:45am | University Welcome 1
The first University Welcome Event, taking place in the Recreation Center’s Main Gym, invites admitted students and supporters from the following colleges to interact and learn more about Cal Poly:
- College of Agriculture Food & Environmental Sciences
- College of Architecture & Environmental Design
- Orfalea College of Business
10:30am-11:15am | University Welcome 2
The second University Welcome Event will also be held in the Recreation Center’s Main Gym, and is intended for admitted students and supporters from the following colleges:
- College of Engineering
- College of Liberal Arts
- College of Science & Mathematics
7pm-10pm | Parent and Supporter Coffee House
While prospective students are attending the Friday Nite Invite, the Chumash Auditorium will host a special event for parents, supporters and family members.
7:30pm-10pm | Friday Nite Invite with Doc Burnstein's
Friday Nite Invite is an event held in the University Union Plaza for prospective Cal Poly students to meet one another and have some fun. This is a great opportunity to connect while enjoying activities like bowling, music, games, club booths, and more. The Transfer Event will also be happening at this time for potential transfer students to meet and interact, while still being close to the Friday Nite Invite happenings.
7:30-10pm | Coffee House
While prospective students are attending the Friday Nite Invite, the Chumash Auditorium will host a special event for parents and supporters. At Coffee House, parents can talk with current students from each of Cal Poly’s colleges while enjoying a cup of local BlackHorse Coffee. There will also be speakers from Administration as well as Parent & Family Programs.
Saturday, April 13th: Mustang Legacy Celebration
10am-11am | Poly Royal Parade
On Saturday morning, various clubs, groups, and organizations will present the Poly Royal Parade on South Perimeter Road. The parade is a showcase of all things Cal Poly, where participants share handmade floats and signs that celebrate the school and its opportunities.
11am-11:30am | Poly Royal Opening Ceremonies
Opening Ceremonies will be held on Dexter Lawn where Cal Poly speakers like President Armstrong and the ASI President will address admitted students and their families. The ceremonies will also honor the Open House Committee.
11am-3pm | Campus Showcase
Over 200 clubs will be represented at Dexter Lawn with booths, food, activities, and more. Come to learn more about Cal Poly’s clubs and organizations and how to get involved.
1pm-4pm | Truck and Tractor Pull
Held almost every April since 1972, the Truck and Tractor Pull is a fun family-friendly event run by the Cal Poly Tractor Pull club. Proceeds go toward a scholarship for the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.
5:30pm-10pm | 79th Poly Royal Rodeo and Concert
Head down to Spanos Stadium for yet another day of Poly Royal Rodeo. This Cal Poly tradition is a must-see, featuring regional and local competitors, as well as a post-rodeo concert by country music sensation Casey Donahew.
Cal Poly’s Open House is a great time to explore the city of San Luis Obispo and discover why it is consistently rated among the happiest cities in the United States. In order to take full advantage of your visit, take time to see some SLO favorites like Bubblegum Alley, enjoy the local cuisine, and obsess over scenic views with one of SLO’s many scenic hikes. After experiencing all that SLO has to offer, you’ll understand why students travel from around the globe to study, work and live here.
