Cerro San Luis Natural Reserve
Details:
Cerro San Luis Natural Reserve, also known as Madonna Mountain, offers a moderately strenuous, dog-friendly trail popular for sunrise and sunset hikes. The 4-mile round-trip hike features three main routes: the moderate Lemon Grove Loop, a steep climb to the Mission Prep “M”, and a challenging trek to the summit.
Located near downtown San Luis Obispo, this 472-acre reserve boasts scenic views of Cal Poly, Downtown SLO, Irish Hills, and Edna Valley. The main trailhead is off Marsh Street near Highway 101, with the Madonna Inn nearby for a post-hike treat.
During the holidays, hikers enjoy the summit’s festive light display, which is visible citywide. A less crowded, 5-mile backside trail offers alternative views and reconnects with the main route.
Cerro San Luis is part of the “Tri-Tip Challenge”, where hikers tackle Madonna, Bishop Peak, and The Cal Poly “P” before indulging in a Firestone Grill tri-tip sandwich. Open dawn to dusk, the trail has little shade, so bring sunscreen!
Hikers and mountain bikers enjoy public access thanks to the Madonna family, making this one of SLO’s most popular outdoor destinations.
