This year’s WinterMezzo Series includes three sequential ways to connect with the music through the Learn, Dine, and Listen events, featuring Music Director Scott Yoo and cellist Jonah Kim. Beyond the talented musician, you can also experience memorable venues throughout San Luis Obispo like the lovely Monday Club, and the beautiful, SLO Botanical Garden!

Festival Mozaic WinterMezzo I | November 15-17, 2019

  • Learn | Notable Encounter Insight: Join Scott Yoo and the Festival Artists for a one-hour tour of Dohnányi’s Serenade for string trio and Beethoven’s “Spring” violin sonata. The musicians will provide insight into the composers’ lives, the historical time period of the pieces, and sharing their perspectives. Come early for happy hour at the beautiful 60 State Park Lounge before the program.

  • Dine | Notable Encounter Dinner: Scott Yoo leads the visiting artists in an exploration of Dvorak’s second piano quartet, an expansive and rich piece of music which exhibits the folk influences that are typical of his writing. The evening will begin with a wine reception and conclude with a three-course gourmet meal featuring wine and food by Vina Robles Winery.

  • Listen | Concert: The first WinterMezzo concert of the season includes works by chamber music masters Beethoven and Dvorak, as well as Hungarian composer Ernst von Dohnanyi. Dohnanyi’s serenade was modeled after trios by Beethoven and Brahms, but also hints toward folk music from his native Hungary.

Festival Mozaic WinterMezzo II | February 21-23, 2020

  • Learn | Notable Encounter Insight: Cellist Jonah Kim takes you on a tour behind Bach’s suites for solo cello, masterpieces that are staples of the cello repertoire. Generally considered to be some of the most profound music in existence, each suite begins with a prelude followed by five Baroque dance movements. Jonah will discuss his take on learning and performing these pieces as well as the historical and musical context in which Bach composed.

  • Dine | Notable Encounter Dinner: Enjoy a gourmet farm-to-table three-course meal, complete with Central Coast wines, at the beautifully restored Monday Club in San Luis Obispo. Then join dancers from the SLO Movement Arts Center and cellist Jonah Kim for a unique music and dance collaborative insight into J. S. Bach’s suites for solo cello.

  • Listen | Concert: Cellist Jonah Kim is joined by professional dancers from the SLO Movement Arts Center for a collaborative performance of three of J. S. Bach’s famous suites for solo cello.

Festival Mozaic WinterMezzo III | April 17-19, 2020

  • Learn | Notable Encounter Insight: Music director Scott Yoo, flutist Alice Dade, and pianist Anna Polonsky lead a one-hour interactive performance and exploration into the Introduction and Variations by Schubert and a trio by Nino Rota, an Italian composer best known for his film scores. Come 30 minutes early to enjoy a glass of wine from one of the Festival’s favorite wineries at the beautiful SLO Botanical Garden.
