Scott Yoo is joined by cellist Bion Tsang and pianist Orion Weiss for an afternoon of chamber music. Richard Strauss first drafted his Cello Sonata in his teenage years, as an entry in a composition contest in which the piece did not receive a prize. After the composer reworked the piece several years later, including completely rewriting two movements, the Cello Sonata has become a standard in the cello repertoire. Schubert’s piano trios marked a calculated move by the composer to move away from composing vocal repertoire. The piece, which lasts about 45 minutes long, is a masterful exploration of textures within the small ensemble.
