Celebrate Arbor Day at the Park & Plant Trees

Saturday, November 7, 9 am – 12 pm
Meadow Park
2333 Meadow, San Luis Obispo CA 93401

Celebrate Arbor Day with the City of San Luis Obispo and your community on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in Meadow Park

Now in our 43rd year as a proud Tree City USA, the City invites residents of all ages to join this hands-on, family-friendly event focused on educating and empowering residents to take an active role in nurturing our urban forest.

Arbor Day event attendees will not only be able to hear from City staff and partners, but they’ll also be able to participate in planting trees at Meadow Park.

We will be raffling a cutting board made from urban wood (Fraxinus uhdei) donated by West Coast Arborist, the City’s Urban Forestry contracting partner.

Arbor Day Event Highlights

  • Welcoming Remarks: City Arborist Walter Gault will open the festivities, emphasizing the City’s commitment to its Urban Forest.
  •  Tree Planting Ceremony: Join neighbors, volunteers and City Staff in planting new trees that will help shape the city’s landscape for generations.

This year’s Arbor Day theme celebrates renewal, an essential part of keeping San Luis Obispo’s urban forest thriving. A healthy mix of young, mature, and older trees creates lasting shade, vibrant wildlife habitat, and the natural beauty our community enjoys every day.

By diversifying our canopy, we strengthen our city’s resilience to pests, disease, and storms, helping ensure a healthier environment for everyone. Planting new trees on Arbor Day is a fun and meaningful way for residents to take part in this effort, supporting Major City Goals tied to Cultural and Economic Vitality, Open Space, Climate Action and Resilience, Neighborhood Livability, and Sustainable Transportation. As part of the City’s Climate Action work, the Ten Tall Initiative aims to plant 10,000 new trees in San Luis Obispo by 2035, and with more than 6,000 already planted since 2021, the community is well on its way.

More About Arbor Day

SLO’s Arbor Day Celebration is an annual event that unites the San Luis Obispo community to celebrate the significance of tree planting, conservation, and environmental stewardship. With over 40 years of history, this event has played a pivotal role in enhancing the City’s urban canopy and raising awareness about the importance of trees. Arbor Day is made possible through the collaboration of several City departments, local organizations, and community volunteers.

SLO’s Thriving Community Forest

San Luis Obispo has a thriving community forest, but that doesn’t happen by accident. In fact, San Luis Obispo had very little greenery in the past, specifically the downtown area. Starting in the 1950s, the community began to prioritize adding greenery downtown and the City’s community forest grew from there. Now, the downtown is known for its tree-lined streets and inviting atmosphere. The City of San Luis Obispo has more than 14,000 public trees that provide a myriad of social, economic, and environmental benefits to residents, visitors, and business owners.
