Sudhu Tewari (San Francisco) and Abe Gibson (San Luis Obispo) collaborate on an evening of music for invented instruments. Tewari has been described as a bricoleur, junkyard maven and audio-gadgeteer. His passion for design, re-design and recuperation has led to the creation of experimental musical instruments, kinetic sculptures, interactive installations, audio electronics, and wearable sound art. He started his academic journey studying architectural engineering at Cal Poly before moving on to Sonoma State University for a bachelor’s degree in Music, a MFA in electronic music and recording technology from Mills College, and a doctorate in cultural musicology from UC Santa Cruz. Tewari currently teaches art and design at California College of the Arts and UC Berkeley, and bronze bell casting at the Crucible. Currently his main instrument is the No Strings Guitar, a modified electric guitar. The NSG strips the electric guitar down to the pickups, used to amplify and process the micro-sounds of different modules: springs, bits of wire, egg slicers, hacksaw blades, etc.
Gibson is a sound artist, organizer and music historian. He has been performing improvised and abstract electronic music for the last 25 years with an array of collaborators including Fred Lonberg-Holm, Alex Wing, Daniel Carter and Tatsuya Nakatani. His work explores the quest for quietude in a landscape fraught with incoherence and distraction. He is interested in how distant events and systems that we can neither see or hear affect us in ways we cannot consciously detect and therefore struggle to articulate. How does one continue to trust their intuition when they are constantly forced to interface with technology in their daily lives? The piece he will be performing, “Your Fortune Told” tells the story of a sham medium who is performing a phony séance while a cataclysmic event occurs simultaneously in the far reaches of the cosmos. This event causes a short circuit of sorts that most would attribute to unexplained phenomena or a communiqué from the spirit world.
