Learning the Art of Hand Lettering

Posted July 22, 2015

I have always been fascinated with hand lettering, stemming from my longtime love for scrapbooking and personalized cards. After pinning numerous designs on my “Inspiration” board, I tried to mimic the lettering works of art myself. Let’s just say… it was not easy.

I dreamed of hand lettering with the unique style and grace of the graphic designers and artists on Pinterest. When I discovered Huckleberry Market’s workshops in SLO, I was 100% in!

I attended “Hand Lettered Quotes & Sayings,” taught by Sadie A. Design, with a girlfriend of mine who was visiting. This hybrid workshop of Hand Lettering 101 and Modern Calligraphy taught us how to take simple words and transform them into art forms. Sadie enlightened us on the tips and tricks she swears by beginning with tracing and transitioning into free hand design. Capped at 12 people, the workshop was very intimate and hands on, allowing Sadie to directly help individuals with questions ranging from letter flow to stroke thickness. The class flew by in a blink of an eye! I left inspired by my new hobby and ready to delve into nightly hand lettering routines.

Huckleberry Market creates the perfect ambiance for a girls’ night out or a creative solo night – plus there is an added benefit of wine, bite size treats, and calligraphy supplies to take home! If you are looking for things to do in San Luis Obispo, I highly suggest checking out Huckleberry Market’s workshops. All levels are welcomed, especially beginners (so don’t be nervous). Some of their upcoming workshops include Metal Smithing, Floral Design, and Screen Printing 101! Sign up before spots run out.
