Highway 1 remains open and accessible throughout San Luis Obispo County. However, a portion of Highway 1 in Big Sur will be closed starting Thursday, August 27, until further notice due to Timber Fire operations.
If you’re traveling north toward Big Sur, Carmel, or Monterey, plan to use Highway 101 as an alternative route and avoid the closed section of Highway 1.

Getting to SLO

By Car
Highway 101 offers a convenient route into SLO, while Highway 1 brings you along some of California’s most scenic coastline. Before hitting the road, check current road conditions and closures so you can choose the best route for your trip.
By Air
Fly into the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP), just minutes from downtown. Once you arrive, you can rent a car, grab a rideshare or use other local transportation options.
By Train
Amtrak brings you right into San Luis Obispo, with the station just a short walk from downtown.

San Luis Obispo’s Mediterranean climate makes it easy to enjoy the outdoors throughout the year. Days are often warm and sunny, while evenings can be cool, especially near the coast.
