Consistently designated to a plethora best-of lists and most recently named one of the most romantic cities in America, along with best main street, best place to visit, best college town, friendliest and healthiest to name just a few, San Luis Obispo continues to garner international attention.
SLO enjoys year-round sun, a warm Mediterranean climate, a world-class wine region, thousands of acres of protected open space, an award winning downtown filled with charming shops, restaurants and hotels tucked into turn-of-the-century mercantile buildings, and a burgeoning night life and cultural scene. Among it all is the beautifully preserved Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa.
There has to be something said for the small coastal town that regularly attracts Willie Nelson, Snoop and some of the top classical music acts in the country. Nearly every night of the week SLO plays host to after-hours entertainment aficionados from all walks. From the 1,289-seat Performing Arts Center to the intimate venues throughout downtown, SLO has a lot to offer.
A booming artisan wine country has been growing, unassumingly, for decades. Recently receiving accolades and international recognition, some two dozen wineries produce critically acclaimed vintages in the Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley. Now wineauxs and hopheads can travel together. SLO-grown craft breweries are populating everything from downtown restaurants to industrial complexes and showing what can be done with the simple combination of barley, hops, yeast and water.
With access to 25 miles of hiking and biking trails in San Luis Obispo city alone, not to mention thousands of acres of open spaces, state parks, national forest and some of the most beautiful lakes in California peppered throughout the county, outdoor adventure opportunities are endless.
Minutes from downtown SLO are miles of uncrowded beaches, pristine coastline, ragged sea cliffs and some of the best ocean vistas this side of Ireland.
Every Thursday night six blocks of Higuera Street are closed off for a three-hour street party featuring some of the freshest produce, hottest barbecue and most engaging entertainers during the second largest farmers’ market in the western United States.
Cal Poly / Cuesta College
A vibrant college town, SLO boasts a youthful, creative and active atmosphere. California Polytechnic State University and Cuesta College also provide cultural excitement in the form of numerous musical and performing arts groups and venues that regularly host major touring shows.
