Francis Poulenc – Sonata for Horn, Trumpet and Trombone
Erwin Schulhoff – Sextet
Edward Elgar – Piano Quintet, op. 84
Franz Schubert – String Quintet in C major, D. 956
Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff’s Sextet for strings, completed in 1924, features a wide range of influences including jazz, Slavic folk songs, and neoclassicism. While summering at an isolated country cottage, Elgar drew inspiration for this quintet from his natural surroundings, including gnarly trees that a local legend described as the remains of evil monks. And Schubert wrote his final work of chamber music just two months before his death, selecting C major as a possible tribute to Mozart and Beethoven who composed quintets in the same key.
